Removing Internal Barriers to Values-Formation

Author : Kenneth Rice
Imagine a conversation between an enlightened leader and a supervisor still caught the ways of command-and-control.Leader: "How's it going?"Supervisor: "We can't get any work out of these people. No one will cooperate, there's no teamwork, employees are not motivated, and Supervisors are looking out for #1."Leader: "So what if everyone had the same vision, purpose, strategic intent, and values as you?"Supervisor: "That would be great but there are too many agendas for that to happen."Leader: …Flat hierarchies, globalization, and cross-functional teams present new challenges to leaders who must influence people who have different styles or views. One of these challenges includes the ability to influence others whom we have no direct authority. Cohen and Bradford (2005) identified several internal barriers to influence:- Lack of knowledge about influencing when there are objective difficulties.- Attitudes that blind leaders to important objective information.- Fear of the other person/group and how they might react.- Inability to focus on mutual needs and how everyone benefits from that. (p. 9-10).How do leaders begin to remove the barriers to influencing and move toward shared values?Cohen, Allan R. and Bradford, David L. (2005). Influence Without Authority 2Nd Ed.
