There is an old saying that says - luck is when preparation meets opportunity. So, how can you get luckier to guarantee your future success. There are two things you can do:1) Be prepared. What do you need to do to be prepared? What is preparation? It is gaining the knowledge, experience, wisdom and insight necessary so you are ready when opportunities arise. There are number of ways to gain these important ingredients to ensure you are ready.- You can attend seminars on your specific area of interest or competence.
- You can read books, lot's and lot's of books.
- You can network with people who can expand your knowledge and experience.
- You can spend routine time in creative thinking.
- You can keep a journal of lessons learned, insights developed and people you have met.
- You can join organizations in your industry or area of expertise.
- You can attend trade shows to improve your awareness, understanding and contacts.
- You can subscribe to generic and specific industry publications.
- You can spend a half a day a week or month in your local library doing research
- You can spend a couple of hours a week browsing through your local bookstore.
- You can start or join a mastermind group.
- You can work 12 or 15 hour days instead of 8 hour days.
- You can develop relationships with mentors or coaches.
- You can write for 15 minutes every day on what you are learning or have learned and how to apply it.Do all of these and I guarantee you will be ready when opportunity crosses your path. Do a half a dozen of them and you will most likely be ahead of your peers. Do none of them and you may as well be satisfied with mediocrity and missing out on opportunities that smack you in the face.2) Keep your eyes and ears receptive to any opportunity that crosses your path. How can you recognize appropriate opportunities when they cross your path?- Stay focused in the present moment.
- Let go of old paradigms.
- Embrace and anticipate change.
- Be willing to take risks.
- Ask lot's of questions of life, yourself, and anyone who may be in a position to helpyou.
- Be a ruthless self-promoter.
- Let go of personal prejudices.
- Let go of status quo thinking.
- Don't wait for opportunities, create them
- Read a couple of books a year by futurists.
- Constantly think out of the box.
- Keep asking, what will the future be like?
- Spend time in reflection and introspection. These lists should give you more than enough to keep you busy for a few months, but more than that, they will guarantee that you get more than your share of luck as you travel life's path.Or, you can just spend a week in Las Vegas or buying lottery tickets and hope and pray that your ship comes in before you die. Now I ask you which do you think will make you lucky?Tim Connor, CSP is an internationally renowned sales, management and leadership speaker, trainer and best selling author.
