The most important day you will ever have is the first day of class with your students. For that reason you have to make the best possible impression that you can. You only have one time to make a first impression so do it well.The first thing is to be dressed in a nice shirt and tie that is clean and pressed. Be sure that you are cleanly shaved and well appointed in your appearance; with out that you will fight an uphill battle. If you are stocky or over weight it would be most advisable to lose some weight so that you give the appearance of self control.At the bell be at the door to greet the students as they enter, they appreciate this as does the Administration. Smile and look as though you are pleased (not happy) to see them. Look in control. Let the student find their seats and get comfortable. Once the bell rings close the door and walk to the front center of the room. Introduce yourself and tell them some interesting information about yourself, they will be curious to know. Dispense this information in a manner that keeps them interested in you, do not tell all.As you talk with them be sure to keep eye contact with them. Be light and pleasant in spirit. Do not be harsh and firm as many tell you to be with students on the first day. In fact it is not advisable for it will start a challenge and that is the last thing that you want. Let the students know that you are there to be of assistance and will be glad to see them if they should need any academic help. Make sure that you come across as caring and concerned. Above all talk to the students like they are adults and it will come back to you 10 fold.At the end of the class be sure to express to them how pleased you are to have them in your class and say good bye to them as they leave. Make your send of a positive one.I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago in Hyde Park Township, near the University of Chicago. As I child I was always drawing and painting. My father owned an art supply company, Favor Ruhl & Watson, where I was able to get all that I needed to progress in my work.I have always enjoyed portraiture and landscape painting. In High School (Naperville Central High School) I took Drafting from Mr. Pierce. I quickly grasped the principles of perspective and drafting and hence made a career with both Fine Art and Architectural Renderings.In the mid 1970's I joined the US Navy and was stationed on board the USS Midway, CV-41. The Midway was home ported in Yokosuka, Japan (A suburb of Tokyo). While in service I traveled all over Asia including such countries as Korea, China, Philippines, Singapore, Pakistan, Hong Kong, and Japan. While in Japan I learned Japanese. I speak German and Spanish as well.I am an omnivorous reader with a love of History and Philosophy. I admire the works of Immanuel Kant, Albert Schweitzer, and Fredrich Nietzsche.
